The Carbon Cycle

What Does Carbon Neutral Mean?

Carbon exists in the earth’s atmosphere, primarily as the gas carbon dioxide (CO2) and plays an important role in supporting life. Trees and plants pull carbon out of the atmosphere to support their growth. Conversely, when they die and rot or are burned, they naturally release the same amount of carbon back into the atmosphere creating what is called a “carbon neutral" process.

Greenhouse Gases and Global Warming

Unlike carbon neutral fuels such as wood, when fossil fuels like coal, petroleum and natural gas are burned, they release old carbon that has been deep in the earth for millions of years, effectively off-setting the carbon equilibrium in the atmosphere. Industry’s rate of fossil fuel emissions or “greenhouse gases" account for the steady rise in atmospheric carbon dioxide levels. It is these greenhouse gasses that are associated with global warming and climate change.

Wood energy does not contribute to global warming because when sustainable harvested wood is burned, it releases the same amount of carbon dioxide that would be released naturally in the forest.

Wood-The Natural Energy Choice for Industry

Choosing to burn wood is a sound economic decision which also supports an environmentally restorative cycle. Energy generated with Biomass fuel in a clean burning combustion system, benefits both industry and the environment. Wood Energy strengthens industry by reducing dependence on greenhouse gas fossil fuels and lessening wood waste’s burden on landfills.
